About Your Hosts

Christine & Dennis

After vacationing in the Apostle Islands and Bayfield for 21 years, we felt some day we wanted to live here. We love sea kayaking and camping on the islands, sailing, the beautiful beaches, Big Top Chautauqua, the orchards, berry & vegetable farms, and fresh fish. Of course there are many other things to love here and Bayfield is a charming small town. So, on June 3, 2013, we became the new owners of Artesian House. Artesian House Bed & Breakfast was designed by a Madison architect and built in 1996 and welcomed its first guests June 14, 1996 and we welcomed our first guests June 14, 2013. Newly updated, Christine & Dennis plan on continuing the legacy of the Artesian House that Al & Margaret started in 1996.

Dennis is Certified as a Woodland Steward and a Naturalist, degrees in Civil Engineering and MBA and has worked in Europe, Canada, Mexico, and throughout the United States. Christine is a Medical Technologist (B.S.M.T.) and has worked in hospital laboratories and for the largest national clinical reference laboratories in sales for most of her career. Before coming to Bayfield, she worked in the Middle East. Dennis & Christine were active in their community in Illinois. Christine was on the Finance Committee for a large DuPage County organization. Dennis was a Winfield Plan and Zoning Commissioner, Director of the Illinois Prairie Path and of Winfield United, and President of the 700+ West-Win Homeowners Association, which often actively addressed local zoning and development issues. Dennis volunteered at Morton Arboretum and DuPage County Forest Preserves. He was a Conservation Foundation Member and West Chicago Prairie Stewardship Group, a River Monitor & Blue Stem Team for the Sierra Club and a Member of the Wild Ones (Native Plants, Natural Landscapes). He was appointed to the INPC (Illinois Nature Preserves Commission) by the State of Illinois Governor.

Living in Bayfield since 2013, Dennis is on several local boards. We volunteer at Big Top Chautauqua and co-sponsored Riding the Wind July 19, 2015. This show debuted now 35 years ago and was the first amazing show we saw at Big Top Chautauqua. We were happy to co-sponsor Belfast to Bluegrass on July 23, 2016. We also support the Landmark Conservancy, the Bayfield Heritage Association, Friends of the Apostle Islands, Mt. Ashwabay, and participate in the voluntary 1% for Recreation Program. We are members of the Chequamegon CCL (Citizens Climate Lobby).

Quiet remote place to relax from the hustle and bustle

“My husband and I had the most amazing time celebrating our anniversary here. Christine and Dennis were so accommodating, friendly, and such wonderful people. There was so much to do when we went into Bayfield which was a couple of miles away for all the adventures but then what was so nice was being able to come back to the Artesian House for a quiet remote place to relax from the hustle and bustle. The nights were so peaceful, relaxing on the huge wrap around deck enjoying a glass of wine. Our room was so clean, with a nice comfy bed. Breakfast was fantastic with fresh food and organic coffee. We will definitely go back!!”

There is an Artsesian Well

“Christine & Dennis are really great hosts. Feels like spending time with old friends. The Breakfast is great with locally sourced fruit, granola and scones. They make sure you are familiar with the room (very clean and comfortable), property and the surrounding community activities. So much to do in the Bayfield/Washburn area with local orchards (blueberries and apples) to visit, Apostle Island Tours, wineries, Madeline Island (great beach and hiking) and kayaking (Cornucopia area sea caves were amazing). Excellent restaurants with some great fish from Lake Superior. The cities have really kept the historic feel and the views are really beautiful. Captured our hearts. All covid protection/rules were followed.”

Best Bed and Breakfast!

“Dennis and Christine have the best hidden gem in Bayfield! Their place is beautiful, updated, so clean, peaceful and relaxing! They go above and beyond to make sure guests enjoy their stay. The breakfast was absolutely incredible each morning with local and fresh sourced items. It was everything we needed to feel fueled to enjoy everything the town and islands had to offer. The location is close to down town yet still nestled in the woods to enjoy some star gazing on the next at night. We loved everything about our stay! Thanks again ❤”

Great place to stay while exploring Bayfield

“Christine and Dennis were excellent hosts in this relaxed, clean, lovely B&B on many acres right outside of Bayfield. They did an excellent job making accommodations warm, welcoming, and safe in the face of Covid. The breakfasts were delicious and the outdoor patio was a great place to enjoy breakfast and unwind after a day full of exploring beautiful Lake Superior. We really enjoyed our stay, highly recommend this gem!”

Peaceful retreat

“Our recent four night stay at Artesian House was wonderful and relaxing. It has a tranquil, wooded setting, and is surrounded by native flowers and trees. However, it is still conveniently located close to the city of Bayfield. Dennis and Christine have truly perfected every detail for their guests. During this challenging Covid pandemic, we felt totally comfortable due to the immaculate cleanliness, and following of safety guidelines. They provide a delicious breakfast with locally picked fruit, and baked goods. In addition, the water comes from an Artesian well on the property, and tastes great. We thoroughly enjoyed becoming acquainted with Dennis and Christine. They were so helpful with suggestions for running/hiking trails, restaurants, and general tips that made our stay even better. We would highly recommend this B&B, and hope to come back again!”

Amazing for guests of any age

“The hosts were very helpful and caring in providing the best experience for our two night stay. Christine guided us to the lovely Apostle Islands National Lake shore for a very fun hike to see the sea caves. We stayed in the Basswood room, which was absolutely beautiful and we were surrounded by woods. It was very peaceful. We (23 and 21) felt it was a friendly stay for any age. Would definitely stay again. The breakfast was delicious and prepared directly from our hosts.”

Wonderful Honeymoon Place

“My husband and I chose Artesian House for our honeymoon based on what we saw online. When we showed up in person, we were not disappointed. The room was cozy, breakfast was delicious (we didn’t want to have to find 3 meals a day), and the B & B? was in a great location. It is just off the main road, so it’s easy to get everywhere, yet not busy because of Bayfield traffic. Christine was a wonderful host, recommended many restaurants and things to do, and we would happily stay here again if vacationing in Bayfield.”

the gift of time

“Thanks for giving this middle aged couple the gift of time. The snow, the food, the ambience, the fireplace set. Less is more, and no more was needed or desired.”

You have built a beautiful place for relaxation and rest.

“Life is made of many moments. Some happy or sad, some simple or challenging, some solitary and others filled with friends. You have built a beautiful place for relaxation and rest. Thank you for creating such a lovely space that allowed us to experience ‘the moments’ to remember.”

-Jim & Lill Taugher, Hartford, WI

We love how you designed the house

“Greg and I had a wonderful (but too short) honeymoon here. We love how you designed the house–it actually got us talking that if/when we build our own, we’d like a layout like this. We love how open it is and how you get to interact with everyone. Thank you for the great experience.”

– Greg & Jenna Munson, LaJolla, CA
